The first American flag to be flown in what is now Kansas was raised near Scandia in 1806.〔(Scandia - KS-Cyclopedia - 1912 )〕 It wasn't settled until 1868 by Swedes fleeing a famine in their native country, and was called New Scandinavia.〔(Home )〕〔(Scandia, Kansas History )〕 The name was changed to Scandia in 1876, according to post office records.〔(Post Offices in Kansas )〕 Scandia was incorporated as a city in 1879. From there it became an important transition point for trade and travel in the early 1900s.〔 It is now a small rural community.〔 〕〔(SPLCenter.org: Hate Groups Map )〕
Scandia is home to three prominent mansions. The Wohlfort Mansion, located south of Scandia stands five stories tall.
